Governor Rendell says he believes universal health care coverage for Americans is inevitable as costs continue to spiral out of control. He says news this past week that General Motors is in dire financial condition... in large part because of the cost of employee health care plans is an indication that the time for comprehensive, uniform health care is right:
"I believe it's coming. When it just affected poor people - there was never going to be the necessary political muscle to achieve universal health care. But when you see the statistics about small businesses having no choice but to throw up their hands and abandon health care coverage . . when you see it even affecting General Motors."
The governor's comments came before a gathering of health care professionals.
He once again defended his proposal to deal with the rising cost of medical assistance in order to balance the state budget by reducing benefits but not cutting people from the rolls.
